MISSIONARY UNION.

ASHBURTON METHODIST WOMEN. A very successful gift afternoon in aid of tne Solomon Islands Christmas Box was held in connection with the Ashburton branch of the Methodist Women's Missionaiy Union in Baring Square schoolroom yesterday afternoon. The president (Sister Mildred) occupied the chair, and presided over a large attendance. The president referred to the forthcoming conference at Ashburton on October 13, and an appeal was made for homes for delegates during their stay. Hospitality was arranged for the Home Mission deputation next week. The Dominion President's quarterly letter was received and read. Reference was made to the work being done by the auxiliaries throughout New Zealand and the needs which existed overseas, and an urgent appeal for renewed effort on their behalf was made. A long and interesting report of the Kurahuna Maori Girls' School was read. Tea was served, and a. enjoyable programme was submitted, items being contributed by the following:—Solos, Mesdames H. J. Constable (2), G. Holmes, and. A. Mcßean; elocutionary, Misses C Hopkins, M. Amos, and Master M. Beauvais. A varied assortment of gifts for the box (all British) was handed in, and £2 in cash. Mrs B. H. Carter (box secretary) moved, and Mrs Wishart (assistant) seconded, a very hearty vote of thanks to the performers, accompanists, and the hostesses.
