' ' Heavy and‘ continuous rain since the early hours of the morning, is causing some apprehension of floods. At 8 o’clock to-night the water was just beginning to flow over the main highway near the Waiohine bridge on the Masterton—Wellimgton road, and two: rather large slips were reported on the Fee.— th-erston side of the Blimutaka, road, which: is passable for one-way tsaffic.‘ There is also la. wash-out to the edge of the bitumen for a distance of about 12 feet in the same locality. The Whareama River, at Tinui, is reported to be running very high, and: other streams on the East Coast are in heavy flood.
DOWN'POUR IN BAY OF PLENTY. FLOODS AND WASH-OUTS. AUCKLAND, June 16. The long, dry spell in the Bay of Plenty district was broken early this moaning by a. heayy downpour, which cauSed floods and wash-outs in some parts. The Taurange-Taneatua. railway line was damaged, holding up train ser—vices, ,and main roads were rendered; unsafe at some points. ’ In the low-lying parts of the country the water reached fence height, causing farmers to remove. their stock hastily to» higher ground. The rain ceased this afternoon, and the water was subsiding liq-night. ‘ .
A rail-way wash-out occurred l)etweell Pongalmwa» and , Pukehi'nn, about 11 miles'from Te Puke. The line crosses a. gully and a. small stream which usually passes through a culvert underneath the line flooded, washing away a portion of the embankment, and leaving about 30 feet of line suspended. 25 feet im- the air.
