SOLO COMPETITION.
THE ASHBURTON SILVER BAND. HIGH STANDARD OF PLAYING. Playing of a high standard: was heard at the solo competition held by the Ashbul‘ton Silver Band last evening. Fourteen senior and 12' junior players took part in the“ competition, which was in every way successful. There- was a. good attendance of band members andx supporters and members of the Salvation Army Band. The judge was Lieutenant W. H. Osborne (conductor of the ’l'imaru Municipal Band) who was welcomed by the conductor (Mr E. It. Hopwood). Mr ‘Hopwood said it was proposed to hold another competition for soles of contest standard at a later date. The supervisor of the competition was Band Sergeant C. Frew. Awards were :—- Senior section—T. Miller (80 points) 1, L. Withell (79 points) 2, 0. Leslie (78 points) 3.Junior section—R. Whiting (64 points) 1, .D. Thomas (63% points) 2. Special prize for junior band. memhers—F. Holloway (57; points) 1, it. Barnett 2. In making the awards, Lieutenant Osborne said the tone of every competitor was satisfactory. He said he believed in playing artistically, but a break in tne continuity seemed to spoil the value of previous playing. He stressed the value of systematic practice with continued and unbroken apu plication. ‘ Reference was made to the work and past services of Mrs H. J. Chapman, who acted as accompaniste. ML‘Hopwood and Lieutenant Osborne paid tribute to her services. A supporter of the band has donated two medals to the hand, one for the boy in the junior~ band making most pi'ogress'during the year, and the other for the junior band player attending most practices.
