(From Our Own Correspondents.)‘ LAURISTON. THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. Mrs W. ‘Gimson (pliesident) presided at the June meeting of the Lauriston branch of the \Vomen’s Institute. An invitation was received from the ‘Chertsey Institute to: attend its birthday party, and Misses E. Maidens and W. E. Lemon were appointed to repre» sent the branch. Lemon 2, Misses A. Hampton and M. Letham (equal) 3. Written competition: Miss Ronn'Gimson 1.

The hostesses were Mrs H. T. Crothcvrs- and Miss A, Hampton, and the competition judges were Mesdames W. D. Brunsden, E. Doak and F. E. Amos. InterhSchoOl Games Played. An inter-school sports afternoon was held on Friday afternoon, when teams representing Barrhill and 'Lauriston Schools played basketball and Rugby football matches. In the girl’ basketball match Laurisy ton defeated Barrhill by seven goals to two after a good game. Miss O. Hartland controlled the game. The seven-a—side .boys’ Rugby match produced some bright football. Lauriston School beat Barrhill by 44 to nil. Mr Hugh McNeill was the referee. ' WA KANUI. BACHELORS’ AND SPINSTERS’ ‘DANCE. The annual ball of the Wakanui bachelors and spinsters was held in the Memorial Hall on Thursday night. The hall was beautifulilgr decorated with. streamers, ballooms, and greenery. Much» credit for the arrangement is due to the joint secretaries, Miss D. lCrockett and IVIr A. Lowen, and an energetic committee, A lucky spot one-step was won by Miss C. Frampton and Mr K. Lamb, While a Monte Carlo: waltz was won by Miss J. Watson and. Mr D. Cutler. The music was supplied by Dab-ourn’s orchestra, an extra being played by Mr Elatman; Mr J. Brand was Master of Ceremonies.

MAYFIELD. ‘ EUCHRE TOURNAMENTS. The third of a series of euchre tournaments was held in the- Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s rooms on Friday evening in aid of the school funds. There was an attendance of about 40 players. The ladies’ prize was won by Miss E, N icolson, with Mrs G. Glassey second, and Mrs Nish getting a consolation award. Among the men Mr G. Harrison was first, Mr A. Sewell second, and Mr I”. :Sowden received the consolation. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Undrill, of Geraldine, who donated the prizes.

HINDS. EU'CHRE PARTY. There was a. good attendance at the fortnightly euchre party held in the school on Saturday evening. Miss Dall—ton and Miss M. Reddeeliffe played off for the ladies’ prize, Miss lDalton winning. The men’s prize was won by Mr P. O’Connor. EALING. i ' THE'WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The June meeting of the Ealing Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Thursday afternoon. Miss H. McGuigan. presided over a fair attend—ance. One new member was enrolled and one resignation received. Remits to the conference were discussed and Miss H. MeGuigan was appointed delegate. A gardening circle was formed. Much amusement was created by im—promptu Speeches and many and varied were the subjects. Competitions resulted as follows; Best laundered and folded table napkin, Miss F. MeGuigan 1, Miss M. Jones 2. Miss H. Mc-Guigan 3. Flowers or foliage, Mrs Keen 1,- single bloom, llrs Gibb 1; truss, Mrs (Aiddings 1. The hostesses were Mesdames Keen, Simpson and Miss H. Galletly.

RAKAIA. ‘ HIBERNIAN SOCIETY CONCERT. A concert (party from ChriStchurch visited Rakain, and gave a concert, in aid of the Rakaia branch of the Hibernian Society. There was a large

attendance, and an excellent programme was presented. The, president of the society (Mr P. J. Hanrahan) thanked the. concert party for visiting ißakaia, and also ex)ressed thanks to the audience. Mr Matt Dickson was the accompanist, and Mr J. L. Connolly was stage manager. ‘ Residents HOnoured. St. Mark’s Schoolroom was well filled when residents of the Rakaia district met to bid good—bye to Mr and Mrs Harrington, who are leaving the districtto reside in Ashburton. The evening was spent in- dancing, and songs were given by Misses B. Crosslcy, E Kidd, Mr L. Keane, and Mr 'l‘. Moore. A step dance was given by Misses J. Hancock and D. filaney. For those present Mr S. Moore spoke of the many kind and generous acts of Mr and. Mrs Harrington, and made them a presentation. Music for the dancing was played by Messrs T. Lawler and L. Keane. Mr Moore was Master of Ceremonies.
