ANZAC STAMPS.

SELLING CAMPAIGN IN '- - - ' ASHBURTON. INCREASED SUPPORT \VANTED. Although there has been a ready sale in mostpparts‘ of the Dominion tor Anzac-stamps issued in April, the sales in Ashburton have not been satisfac—i tory. To remedy this, the Ashburton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association has commenced a campaign for selling the stamps. The services of the campaign will be the selling of a large. number of women helpers have been enlisted, and Mrs J. Russell Wells is direCting their operations. Part of the campaign will be the selling -~of-~ stamps in the porch of‘ the Ashburton 'Post Office, and workers were there this morning for that purpose, and) will probably sell- them there every day until the stamps are withdrawn from circulation on June 20. _ Through the medium of the Anzac Commemoration stamp the community is being given an oppoi'tunity of show-' ing in a practical manner, twenty—one years after the great eVent, that its high record for the sacrifice of 6hr men in the defence of their country has not .been dimmed by the passage of time. The experience of the Returned Stil-'dier-s’ Association has beenthat war disability persists long after the period of active service, and New Zealand’s pension legislation has quite recently had to be amended owing to the fact that physical and mental stress endur‘ed during wartime has become ‘more ‘eavident with advancing age, leading to lpremature breakdown or reduced cap‘acity for work. ' v ‘ Pensions and official allowances have not been stintcd, and grants from ”various patriotic funds have enabled the scope of assistance to the returned men and their dependants to be extended, but outside these spheres there exists a necessity for expenditure on a variety of relief measures, including provision .of occasional help in the way of food, assistance to establish men in occu‘pations, grants for travelling to new lsituations, supply of clothing to the linen and their children, and many ‘forms of assistance in connection with domestic emergencies.

The cost of administering relief will be borne by the Returned Soldiers’ Association, so that the whole amount subscribed by the public can be utilised for the purpose: of relief.
