SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR. TRIUMPH FOR SPIN BOWLERS. Winning their final game in South Africa recently, the Australian team made their record for the tour 14 wins, two draws and no defeats (states the “Sporting Globe”). They thus retained the unbeaten record of Australian teams in South Africa. No Australian team has yet lost a game in that country. The statistics of the tour show that Fingleton and Brown, Australia’s new opening pair, as the most prolific scorers, each, with more than 1,000 runs, and they are first and second respectively in the averages. Chipperfield, McCabe, O’Brien and Darling all scored more than 500 runs, and obtained good averages. Fingleton leads the century scorers with six innings of three figures including three in successive hands in the Tests. On another occasion he missed the century by only one run. He has been a model of consistency, getting runs at almost every appearance. McCabe and Chipperfield each made four centuries. How O’Reilly and Grimmett have stood out in the bowling is well revealed by the figures, and they are well ahead in the averages. McCormick ■ gave them the best support, but Fleetr wood-Smith, because of his injured hand, had a disappointing experience. He did not appear at all in the latter half of the campaign, and his absence threw a great deal of extra work on the. others. Century scores were made as follow: J. H. Fingleton: 121 Natal, 112 third Test, 110 Transvaal, 108 fourth .Test, 167 Natal (return game), 118 fifth Test. S. J. McCabe: 14 first Test, 189 not out second Test, 115 Border, 112 Orange Free State. A. G. Chipperfield: 105 not out Transvaal, 109 first Test, 105 border, 107 not out Western Province. W. A.
