READY TO TREAT

THE ATTITUDE OF ITALY.

PEACE TALKS AT GENEVA.

SANCTIONS AN OBSTACLE.

(United Press Association—Copyright.) LONDON, April 14.

Baron Aloisi has officially informed the League Secretariat that he is going to Geneva to-day, arid will be ready to take part in the negotiations with the Abyssinian delegate to-morrow. The Geneva corespondent of the “D'aily Telegraph” says the general impression is that Italy’s demands will be strongly in conflict with the principles of the Covenant and that serious consideration of them will be impossible. Senor de Madriaga would then have to report failure to the Committee of Thirteen.

It is possible that Baron Aloisi may attempt to postpone a decision, but an influential body of League members, headed by Mr It. A. Eden (British Foreign Minister) are apparently determined not to countenance further sidestepping. The Rome correspondent of the “Morning Post” says one of the gravest obstacles against the possibility of fruitful peace discussions at Geneva is the renewed threat of more sanctions. On this, Dr. V. Gayda, in the “Giornale D’ltalia,” says: “Mr Eden is holding out the olive branch in one hand and brandishing a sword in the other. Italy is asked to discuss peace in an atmosphere of intimidation. Only a madman could believe that Italy would be willing to accept such a situation.” ENORMOUS COST OF WAR. SANCTIONS NOT INEFFECTIVE. ITALIAN INDUSTRIES AFFECTED. (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) . LONDON, April 14. The Rome correspondent of “The Times” says it is estimated that the Abyssinian campaign has already cost £113,000,000, while 450,000 Italians have been engaged on die northern and southern fronts. It is becoming evident that sanetiens have not been as ineffective as the Italians profess, tire textile and other industries being severely bit.
