BIG ’QUAKE IN SOUTH.
COMPARABLE WITH HAWKE'S BAY DISTURBANCE. (Special to the “ Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Two big earthquakes, probably two of the most severe ever recorded in the Dominion, have shaken islands several hundreds of miles south of New Zealand. Records on the seismographs at the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory show that the disturbances lasted for an exceptionally long period and were probably as big as the earthquake at Hawke’s Bay in 1931. Mr H. F. Baird, of the observatory, said yesterday that the origins apparently were several hundreds of miles south of Stewart Island. Activity about the Macquarrie Islands was fairly severe some years ago, but it appeared that these recent disturbances were considerably nearer New Zealand. One of the most severe earthquakes ever felt in New Zealand since its settlement by Europeans was recorded in the south-west of the South Island about 1829.
