BOXING.
WELTER-WEIGHT TITLE BOUT. NEW YORK, March 4. It is announced in Chicago that Barney Ross will defend his welterweight title in Australia early in May. It is understood that Ross has been guaranteed 45,000 dollars for the title bout. An Australian promoter will select his opponent. AIAY NOT SUITABLE. SYDNEY, March 5. Mr Charles Lucas, referring to the message from Chicago, said that he had been corresponding with Ross about a title fight with Jack Carroll. He had agreed to Ross’s terms, which were not quite the same as those mentioned in the message, but were approximately for the same sum. It would b'e impossible to arrange a fight for Alay, as that month would he unsuitable for open-air boxing. He would go to America to complete negotiations for the title fight, but it would take place next summer.
