MISSIONARY UNION.
ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH BRANCH. The St. Andrew’s Church Ashburton branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union held its opening meeting for the year in St. Andiew s Hall vesterday afternoon, when the president (Mrs R. S. Watson) presided over a very large gathering. A letter was received from Sistei Lowery, of Maungapohatu, acknowledging Christmas gifts and describing Christmas festivities at the Maori Missi on station. Gifts of material and sewing cotton were also acknowledged. A letter was read from Miss Peggy Miller, of Matahi, the Maori Mission station allotted for this year to the Ashburton Presbyterial Association. Gifts of left-off clothing for this centre were solicited, and members agreed to bring parcels to the April meeting, so that the clothing might be distributed before winter. The president stated that gifts of material and wool were also required for the “Busy Bees,’ who had resumed activities under Mesdames Grainger and Rickard. It w«is agreed that a letter conveying good wishes be forwarded to Mrs J. W. Wood, a member who recently left the district to reside in Timaru. lire president welcomed Airs D. D. McLachlan, of Tinwald, who gave an interesting talk on the women of China with a comparison between their religion of fear, and the Christian attitude toward religion. An account was also given of the conversion of Marshal Feng. The president thanked Airs AlcLachlan. Two solos were given by Airs A ewlands. A letter was read from Air Jansen, of the Canton Villages Mission staff, describing his first Christmas in China.
