WORK ON ROADS.
HIGHWAY BOARD ACTIVITIES. (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A review of recent work of the Main Highways Board was given by Mr M. H. Wynyard, motorists’ representative on the board, to the halfyearly meeting of the jSoutli Island Motor Union last evening. Mr Wynyard quoted the following figures in comparing road works in 1933-34 and 1934-35: 1933-31. 1934-35. £ £ Board’s share of maintenance ..... 674,009 932,000 Board’s share of construction 198,000 320,000 » In accordance with its usual piactice, he said, the board had spent money on maintenance in each island on the basis of the number of cars it had. The amount of money spent m the North Island in 1934-35 had been 05.44 per cent, of the total, leaving 34.56 per cent, for the South Island. This corresponded closely with the number of vehicles in each island, since 64.31 of the total number were m the North Island—the remaining 30.0 J per cent, in the South. Speaking of work done in the three highways districts in and around Christchurch, which covered practically the whole of Canterbury, Mr \\ynyard said 65 miles of sealing or covering had been completed and 30 mi cs were being done, or were under contract. Twelve bridges had been completed and some large ones, including one over the Waimakariri, weic being built. A bridge over the Conway was to be begun almost at once. * I ■liWI
