At the meeting of the Ashburton District committee there were present: Messrs C. J. Harper, D. McLean and D. Thomas, the first named gentleman being moved to the chair. A letter from Mr J. Grigg, apologising for his unavoidable absence, was received. Mr Grigg was elected chairman, and the committee adjourned. 'the Upper Ashburton committee then sat, there being present: Messrs C. J. Harper, D. McLean and S. S. Chapman. Mr Harper was moved to the chair. The same gentleman was elected chairman ioi the year. The Ash mrton Guards.—A well attended special meeting .if the Ashburton Guards was held «n the Borough Council ChimU-rs on Tinirsday evening.. The business was the election of captain, and Lieutenant J. H. Clayton was in the chair. , The resignat'un of Captain C. W. Purnell, through illhealth, was feelingly alluded to by *i veral members of the company, and upon the motion ox int E. Moss, seconded by Private F. Clark, a resolution expressive of regret and sympathy was passed. Mr Northey was unanimously chosen captain of the company. The chairman congratulated the company on the choice of their commander, and expressed his regret that owing to his departure from the district would probably be the last occasion upon wdiich be should meet the company. .

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," Mar. 5, 1911). Appointment of Health Inspector.— At a, meeting of the Ashburton Hospial and Charitable Aid Board this morning the question of the appointment of an inspector under the Public Health Act was discussed at considerable length. It w r as moved by. Mr Lambie that the 1-"- agree to the suggestion of the Department of Public Health, and is willing to contribute the sum of £IOO a year toward the salary and expenses for services of the inspector of the Department of Health (Mr Mark Kershaw, of Christchurch). Failure of Water Supply.—-A number of residents in fihe Borough are complaining that their pump water supply has entirely disappeared of late r and consequently they have been compelled to have their premises connected with the high pressure mains. In view oi : e fairly high average rainfall during the past two years,, it seems strange that the* underground springs should have sunk to a lower level. Applications for Positions.—There are 42 applications for the position of Town Clerk and Borough Engineer at Ashburton, and 32 for the position of Running Engineer at the Waterworks. The appointments will be considered this evening, but it is doubtful whether so large a number of arnilirations can be dealth with, and the consideration may require a special meeting of the Borough Council.
