CRAIN AND PRODUCE. THE DUNEDIN MARKETS, - * (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, February 7. Threshing of some of the crops in Otago is now being carried out, and the new season’s wheat is available from Central Otago, Taieri, and further south. The quality of the wheat is excellent, and yields are good. Prices for fowl wheat are inclined to ease as the new wheat is becoming more plentiful There is not a great deal of fowl wheat available, but the position should improve shortly. Merchants are buying from hand to mouth, the present quotations, ex store, Dunedin, may be given as 4s 9d to 5s a bushel, sacks extra. Some new season’s oats have appeared on the market from early sown crops south of Dunedin. Yields are exceptionally good, and in one instance 403 bags were garnered from 13 acres of land, a return equivalent to 140 bushels an acre. Merchants are not displaying any great interest in the market as they expect prices to ease. Some of the early lines threshed have been sold at 2s 2d a bushel, sacks extra, on trucks. These haye been secured by millers, but merchants’ ideas of values are well below this figure. There is practically no demand for oats for prompt delivery to the North Island, and quotations for delivery ahead have been made at 2s i d f.0.b., s.i., for A Gartons. This price is equivalent to less than 2s a bushel on trucks. Chaff still meets a slow demand. Most of the stores are blocked, up with wool, and only small stocks of chaff are held. Prices remain about the same as last week, best quality being worth about £5 10s a ton. As supplies are wanted they are being drawn from Canterbury. The potato market is over-supplied, and it is difficult to effect sales. Retail demand is small. The high prices at the end of last season caused a greater number of householders than usual to plant potatoes in their gardens. . ... All the seed markets are quiet, with low prices indicated by merchants, who cannot see much encouragement to handle all the seeds that will be on offer ttis season. The weakness in the market applies particularly to ryegrass. Threshing has commenced in most districts, but practically no sales have to be recorded. Prices being offered by merchants are not acceptable to farmers, who are storing their supplies in the meantime. ENGLISH QUOTATIONS.
