FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 8, 1886). Air Ashton’s Invention. —We understand that Air Ashton intends patentring the little contrivance invented by him for watering lawns and gardens. Many persons who have seen it, and have" a practical knowledge of the subject, speak very highly of Air Ashton’s invention. Sunday School Treat.—The annual treat given to the children attending the two Sunday Schools in connection with St. Stephen’s Church took place yesterday. The Messrs Hunt a had most kindly placed their grounds at the disposal ot the school committee. The teachers, with Air R. S. Bean and Aliss Compton at their head, worked most energetically in amusing the children and in the administering to their physical wants. Licensing Elections:—All interested in the Licensing Committee elections are reminded that nominations for the Borough Committee must be handed in to the Borough Officer (Air C. Braddell) at the Town Clerk’s Office by uoon to-morrow ; and those for Alount'Somers at the Road Board Office, Alount Somers. For the Ashburton district by noon on Thursday at the Saleyards office, Tinwald, and for the Upper Ashburton .District by noon on Friday at the Road Board Office, Timvald. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

Horticultural Show.—Although the actual official figures are not to -hand, it is understood that the entries for the Ashburton Hbrticultural Society’s annual flower show to be held to-riror-row constitute a record. Each of the sections is well filled, and it is stated that the quality of the blooms, fruit and vegetables is generally very fine. The Volunteer Rifles.—The following team will represent the Ashburtoq Volunteer Rifles, in their match for the Studholme Cup to-morrow at the Wakanui Reach: Lieutenant R. Meechan, Colour-Sergeant G. AVillers', Sergeant A. J. Childs, Corporal J. Clayton, Corporal Ai. Knox, Lance-Corporal J ! . Stephens, Privates Niall and G. Parsons. Emergencies: Sergeant Andrews and Corporal W. Childs. Fire Briagde Aleeting.—The annual meeting of the Ashburton Volunteer hire Brigade was held last evening, Captain T. Barber presiding over an attendance of 19 members. The chairman, in reading the annual report, said that the attendance at practice and alarms was a matter for congratulation for, out of a roll number ot 24, there had been an average attendance of 23. The election of officers resulted as fol:—Captain, Air Thomas Barber ; Ist Lieutenant, Mr L. Kidd: 2nd. lieutenant, Air F. S. Nicholls; steamer foreman, Air H. Johnson; curricle foreman, Mr H. Shepherd; hook and ladder foreman, Air A. Alulford ; 'secretary, Air F. S. Nicholls; treasurer, Air H. Shepherd; committee, the officers, -Driver Gibson, Foreman H. Johnson and Fireman L. Grant.
