WHEAT HELD UP.

LYTTELTON LOADING DISPUTE. WORK RESUMED LATER. (Special to the “Guardian.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. While the stevedores temporarily refused to handle them, 12,0)0 sacks of wheat, part of a cargo of 17,WU, lay on. the wharf at Lyttelton yesterday waiting shipment to Auckland in the Waimarino. The men objected to the trucks having been loaded at country stations with the bottom tiei o sac s laid flat instead of standing up, and asked for extra men to help with the handling. They were allowed one extra man, but ceased work foi some hours, resuming late in the afternoon. There were objections by the men on Wednesday, and many grain merchants immediately advised their clients in the country of the position, and asked them to load with the bottom tier of bags on end in the future. Lorry owners have also been asked o do so. Handling sacks into eoasta vessels from the bottom of the oa means a good deal of lifting dn ess the railway trucks are loaded with the lowest layer upright. The refusal of the men to work the Waimarino’s load was rather alarming to merchants in the city, because shipments to Auckland are heavy ®t present with the new crop coming in fast, and will probably be heavier in the i next few w r eeks. There are two more boats for the north next week, which between them will take between 30,000 and 40,000 sacks.
