FLOOD DAMAGE.

LOSS IN EGMONT COUNTY. BRIDGES ESTIMATED AT £40,000. (Per Press Association). ELTHAM, This Day. The extent of the damage in the Opunake district by the recent storm is not generally recognised. Thirteen bridges in the Egmont County, of which Opunake is the centre, were destroyed, the total damage being estimated at £40,000. In addition to the loss of bridges* and many chains of roadway, a number of rivers completely changed their course, leaving bridges suspended and useless. As the outcome of a conference with the District Public Works Engineer, county and dairy factories’ officials, Mr C. A. Wilkinson, member for Egmont, has made urgent representations that the Minister of Public Works visit the district.

An estimate of storm damage in the city of Palmerston North places tho amount at £IO,OOO for public utilities and private property. This excludes the havoc at the showgrounds and at the Awapuni racecourse. At the showgrounds the cost of repairs is estimated to exceed £2OOO and the damage at Awapuni is not yet calculated. The cost of replacing property in surrounding farm country is incalculable.
