AUSTRIAN MONARCHY.

THE CAMPAIGN INCREASING. ASSURANCES CONTRADICTED. (United Press Association—Copyright) PARIS, February 6. The Archduke Otto arrived unexpectedly at Paris yesterday, accompanied by Dr. Weisner, the leader of the Austrian Monarchist movement, but they did not see Prince von Starhemberg, who has gone to Vienna. Prince von Starhemberg, it is stated, does not wish a meeting. The Archduke undertook the rash journey in direct opposition to Prince yon Starhemberg’s wishes. Meanwhile, messages from Vienna indicate that Prince von Starhemberg’s own activities at Paris are meeting strong criticism from the Austrian official press. The Vienna correspondent of “The Times” says it seems clear that Prince von Starhemberg has gone further than Vienna desires at present, although it is reported from Paris that he did not give M. Flandin (French Foreign Minister) the assurances reported earlier, but merely promised to inform the great Powers if Austria intended to restore the Hapsburgs, adding that Austria could not abandon the principle of monarchy, but reserved her entire liberty of action in this purely internal question. Dr. Wiesner stated on behalf of the Archduke Otto: “The restoration of his Majesty to the Austrian throne is not indefinitely postponed.” The Vienna correspondent of “The Tillies” adds: “Despite frequent official assurances, the monarchist campaign is increasing and the countries hostile to the Hapsburg restoration feel that soon nothing will be lacking but the finishing touch.” The “Reichpost,” the Austrian Government’s own newspaper, replying to anti-Hapsburg articles in the German press, says: “If Nazi Germany can be ineffably happy under the absolute role of an Austrian (Herr Hitler)— why should it begrudge Austria similar happiness? Why should this fortunate Germany hinder Austria from looking for similar, though . less absolute, rule?”
