Nearly 50 years have passed since Lord Durham made a speech at the Gimcrack -dub dinner at York, in which he criticised the running of the horses from Sherwood’s stable, of which Sir George Chetwynd, one of the most conspicuous racing men of the day, was one of the leading patrons. Sir George Chetwynd regarded the speech as an attack upon his integrity as an owner, and brought an action against Lord Durham. The owner of the winner of the Gimcrack Stakes, a two-year-old race run at the York meeting, is afterwards the guest of honour at the annual dinner of., the Anciente Fraternitie of York Gimcracks. The 169th of these gatherings was held at York a few weeks ago, and the principal guest was Viscount Milton, who probably is the youngest owner who has ever won the Gimcrack Stakes, he having been successful last season with Paul Beg. Lord Milton is a descendant of Lord Rockingham, a notable figure on the English Turf in its early days, and who had the distinction of defeating Gimcrack, after whom the Gimcrack Stakes was named, with his Yorkshire-bred Bay Malton. The opportunity has often been availed of in the past of the senior steward of the Jockey Club, who is invariably one of the guests, to make an important pronouncement regarding Turf affairs, and the owner of the Gimcrack Stakes winner too often makes suggestions for the improvement of racing. The Aga Khan had the distinction of twice being the chief guest at the dinner, as he won the Gimcrack Stakes in 1933 with Miss Ruston, and again the following year with the undefeated Bahram. He made many suggestions which he thought might prove beneficial to l racing, and his lead was followed this time by Lord Milton. One point raised by him, however, is causing a good deal of controversy, and that concerned those people warned off by the Jockey Club. He contended that a person who had been warned off should be given an indication of how long he was likely to be withheld. He submitted that the livelihood of the man was seriously affected, as he did not know whether to* wait for the lifting of the ban or to give up all hope* of returning to racing either for sport or as an occupation. Lord Milton also pleaded lor lower prices of admittance to racecourses, and advocated increasing the place money in races; but in that he was following the Aga Khan, who made a similar suggestion in one of his speeches. Lord Milton pointed out that for some years past the Government had provided large sums for the well-being of cattle, sheep, pigs, etc., but no one seems to do anything for horses. He hoped some of the money gained from the totalisator would he utilised for that purpose. Lastly, he raised the question of jockeys’ expenses, which, he said, entailed hardship to small owners and trainers. Jockeys frequently charged full expenses, though they often rode for several owners at the same meeting, instead of apportioning them among all the owners concerned. Although a young man, Lord Milton appears to have made an excellent impression, as liis speech was full of practical and commonsense suggestions.
