FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 7, 1886). Lawn Tennis Match—For tho first time the representatives of Ashburton have played llakaia at tennis. The match came off on Mr Hardy’s chipped court at the latter place. The doubles sets between Messrs Curtis and Mce (Ashburton) and the Messrs Hugonin Bros, (llakaia) and the singles sets between the same players, were very well contested, and some splendid rallies resulted. Mr E. Crisp and Mr C. Hugonin showed up well in volleying. The time dicl not allow for the hriisu of the singles jet between Messrs Cu:tis and Lyttelton. Hugonin Bros, proved entirely too good lor their opponents all round. Sale of Hotel—lt will be seen by an auction report in another column that the Methven Hotel property was sold on Saturday for the sum oi £2509 to Mr Shand, of Messrs Wood, Shand and Co., Christchurch, Fires in County—Last Thursday evening the house occupied by Mr Argvle, at the Forks, was totally destroyed by fire. There .was no insurance. Late on Friday night a stable grain shed and contents, hear Bowyer’s Stream the property of Mr Stephenson, was burned down. They were insured in the North British Mercantile Insurance Co., for £3OO, but the loss is estimated at £l5O above that amount. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 7, 1911). Public Librarian—At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council, Miss Evelyn B. Baird, was appointed to the position of Librarian at the Public Library out of 11 applicants. Chairman’s Besignation. —Mr W. G. Sillier tendered his resignation as chairman of the By-Laws Committee at the meeting of the Bopough Council last evening. The Mayor explained that the resignation was due to the Water Supply Committee in forming the water by-laws, had not consulted Mr Hillier, as chairman of the by-laws committee, as demanded by the standing orders of the council. Councillor C. W. Nicoll explained that the matter had been a pure oversight, and in his capacity of chairman of the Water Supply Committee lie apologised to Councillor Hillier ftjr his mistake. In reply Cr. Hillier said that he accepted the apology, but that it was not the first occasion such a thing had happened. He would withdraw his resignation. r The Census—-The census enumerator for the Ashburton County (Mr W. W.. White) states that the taking of the census this year involved double the amount of w ork it has done >on previous occasions. This is due to the fact that in country districts agricultural statistics are to be gathered. There is sufficient employment for 35 men in the County, Mr White states as he has divided the County' into that number of areas workable by one man.
