ANNUAL MEETING HELD.

REVIEW OF YEAR’S ACTIVITIES.

The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade held its annual meeting last night, Superintendent 1/. Kidd presiding. The report of the foreman (Mr H. Hefford) stated that for the period from February 1, 1935 to January 31, 1936, the strength of the brigade Avas 13 members. There had been 52 roll calls, consisting of 21 fires, one false alarm, 15 meetings and 15 practices. The average attendances at fires bad been 11.

Tlie classification of fires Avas grass and rubbish 5. fences 2, chimney 1, fires in buildings 13. Five alarms Avere first given in the central fire bell, and 16 first received by telephone. The approximate value of buildings endangered Avas £1785, and of contents £IB4O. The approximate value of the insurance on property Avas £2290 and on contents £1349. The approximate loss of buildings Avas £llls, and on contents £6lO.

The area protected by the brigade Avas 1130 acres, and the capital value £769,936. Tlie population area Avas 5560.

The balance sheet shoAved a credit of £6l 15s. The receipts, amounting to £lB4 Is 4d, included a Borough Council subsidy of £l2O. The expenditure included items of £23 11s 3d for plant and repairs, £lO lor delegates’ expenses, £ll lor boot money.

£3 5s for members’ insurance, and 7s 6d for uniforms and repairs. It Avas decided that the brigade be represented at the United Fire Brigade Association Conference at Hastings on March 9. Superintendent Kidd Avas appointed as delegate.

Officers elected were:—Superintendent, L. Kidd; deputy-superintendent, H. Hefford; lieutenant, J. Hickey; secretary and treasurer, Fireman C. Sohvay; foreman, Fireman C. Solway; general committee, the officers, driver Gibson, Firemen C. Bax and S. Freddy, finance committee, the officers, Driver Gibson and Fireman R. Leask. A* vote of thanks Avas moved to telephone operators for tlie help they bad given the brigade in calls to fire during the year, and to Mr F\ Small bone for the use of his truck.
