THE ASHBURTON DOMAIN.

(Sir, —In the columns of the “Guardian” I noticed some remarks made by Councillor Buchanan regarding the way in which the Domain is tended. Such things as rustic seats, fences, and bridges seldom last very long and generally come under repair during the winter months. Considering the hot weather experienced during December and January I think the Domain looks very well ; and for its size and the amount of money spent on it, compares very favourably with others and is a credit to the committee and stall. “LOCAL RESIDENT.”

Si r,—Please allow me a little space in reply to the letter signed “Visitor in your issue of Friday last. As to his remarks regarding the pole to be used in connection with the lifebuoy, tins was only placed there last year and was broken. What visitor would nave known anvthiug about it? Tins, I think, shows that the letter originated from a resident of the town perhaps even a councillor. As to his remarks about the ribbon border, perhaps he could give a better way of laying out a long, narrow bed sucli as it is. As to’ his general remarks about the Domain, let him remember the miles of paths to be kept clean and grass edges to be clipped ; also let him try to grow flowers in beds oversliaded by trees, as many beds in the Domain are ; also let him remember the Curator has only a permanent staff of two, one. of whom is a- good deal of his time mowing grass. Ag 3 ' l1 .' he Inis a large amount of work in the town to attend to outside the Domain. Let “Visitor ’ try his hand at keeping things in order for a week, and I think he would have different ideas. To finish up, it seems to me liis letter is the outcome or a little personal spite rather than fair criticism. FAIR PLAI.
