The Scottish Universities by-election resulted :■ — Ramsay MacDonald (Nat.) 16,303 Professor Dewar - Gibb (Scottish Nat.) ... 9,034 D. Cleghorn - Thompson (Labour) 3,597 The by-election was necessitated by the death of the elected candidate, Mr Archibald Skelton (Parliamentary Un-der-Secretary for Scotland) dying a few hours before the declaration of the poll at the general elections in No\ embei. At the general elections Mr MacDonald was defeated for his old seat, Seaham, Durham, by Mr E. ShinweH /'Labour) by 38,380 votes to 17,882.
