SEAMEN'S STRIKE.
MAN ATTACiKED IN NEWCASTLE.
VOLUNTEERS NOW NUMBER IGOO (United Press Association—Copyright.) NEWCASTLE January 16. Because of a number of attacks made recently, the police are taking special precautions on the waterfront, and a constant patrol has been ordered. It is alleged that a steward from the Abel Tasman was attacked by a number of men, who flung him to the ground kicked him, and stole his discharges and a bank book, in winch there was a balance of £ls. The steward was not a volunteer. More than 1000 licenses, including 350 by post, have now been issued to seamen in Sydney. There arc now not more than 100 U vacancies to be filled on 35 vessels now idle in Australia. In the whole of Australia more than 1600 volunteers have been placed in 02 ships.
