BRITAIN'S COMMANDING LEAD.
GREATEST ACTIVITY SINCE 1931
(United Press Association— Copyright.) LONDON, Jan. 14. An improvement in world shipbuilding is shown by Lloyd's returns for the quarter ended December 31. The total for the quarter was 1543,153 tons, excluding Russia, from which no figures arc available. It is the best quarter since that ended in June, 1931, 48.2 per cent, of the total being built in Britain and Ireland. The British total of 743,086 tons shows a large increase for the quarter, compared with the previous quarter, and is the highest for five years. It exceeds the aggregate tonnage under construction in the seven leading countries abroad, among which Germany heads the list with 254,121 tons, followed by Japan (118,610). The building of ships aggregating 311,100 tons was begun in Britain hi the last three months.
Steam and motor oil-tankers are being constructed of a total tonnage of 438,560, Britain again heading the list in both number and tonnage. Half of the tonnage being constructed in Britain up to December 31 consisted of motor-ships.
