OBITUARY.

MR J. R. MONTGOMERY. Mr Johnston Richard Montgomery, an old and respected resident of Ashburton County, died in tho Ashbiuton Hospital on Sunday. Mr Montgomery ca'me to the Dominion from Ireland in 1874 and after following farming work in. the Canterbury districts he joined the railway service, in which he held the position of ganger, and was for many years stationed at Ealing. In 1905 he, and his gang, won the prize donated by Sir J. G. Ward for the best-kept permanent way sub-section. Mr Montgomery was twice married, his first wife having died many years ago at Ealing. For the last 16 years he lived in retirement at Graham's Road, Tinwald. He was a keen angler, but of late years had to give up the sport for health reasons. Besides his wife, ho leaves an adult family of three sons and three daughters, also several grand-children. Tho funeral took place, at the Ashburton Cemetery yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended by old identities and: friends of the family. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Very Rev. G. Miller.
