(Received This Day, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, January 14. A bulletin issued this, afternoon from Middlesex Hospital, where Mr Rudyard Kipling was ©grated upon, states that he'ls maintaining his condition. Inquiries as to Mr Kipling s condition were made to-day on behalf of the King, who was informed that he was a shade better and that his condition was as satisfactory as could be expected in the circumstances.

A bulletin issued last evening stated: "The condition of Mr Kipling is considered rather grave. At the moment he is holding his own." Mr Kipling, who is 70 years of age, left his home in Sussex at the end of last week, and before admission to the hospital was staying in London before going ahroad for the winter months, according to his custom. GRAVE ANXIETY FELT. (Received This Day, 1.20 p.m.) LONDON, January 14. Mr Kipling's operation was for a perforated stomachic ulcer, the condition of which was liable to a sudden relapse. Grave anxiety was felt late to-night. Mrs Kipling, and his daughter, Mrs Bainbridge, saw the patient for a few moments in the morning and revisited the hospital in the evening, but Mr Kipling, "who had been dozing fitfully, was too exhausted to speak. The callers included Mr Baldwin, who is Mr Kipling's cousin.
