LUCKY PURCHASE

STATUETTE BOUGHT FOR POUND SOLID GOLD AND DIAMONDS. AN OFFER OF £10,750 REFUSED. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 8.40 a.m.) CALCUTTA, January 14. A lucky purchase was made at Benares by an officer of a British regiment. When examining ornaments in a brass-dealer's shop in the city, the officer noticed "a small satnette, which appeared to bo of brass, with glass eyes. He bought it for £l. After cleaning the statuette he was convinced it was valuable, and took it to an expert, who declared it to be solid gold, with eyes of rose diamonds, and over 1000 years old. The officer declined an offer of £10,750 for the statuette complete, but sold the diamonds for £3900. The officer is shortly going to England on leave and hopes to sell the statuette there.

Meanwhile hundreds of people are flocking to the brass dealer's shop, buying ornaments at ridiculous prices in the hope of further lucky purchases.
