CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 11. The third and fourth of the eight sectional games which will compnse the preliminarly stages of the rinks championship at the New Zealand bowling tournament, were played today. All 13 greens were m excellent order and showed little signs of the strain imposed on them by the week s intensive play. Rain, which fell at the start of the tournament, has been of great assistance in preserving tlie turf. Players, on the other hand, are beginning to feel the strain of tournament conditions. The visiting N e w South Wales party, especially, is finding New Zealand “ championship play a severe test of stamina. The weather this morning was pleasant though overcast. The Grey Lynn rink skipped by Whittle, who won the rinks championship of 1935, was defeated by Barlow’s Sumner rink. The result was a surprice and the success of the local rink was most popular with Christchurch bowlers. Whittle also lost the fourth round game, and Barlow went on ior another win.

At the Elmwood green there was a remarkably even match between Thorndon (Casey) and Kaikorai (Upton). It ended in favour of Thorndon by 35 to 34. Remarkable scoring was achieved in the game between rinks skipped by Henry,. (Edgeware) and Sunderland (Alexandra). The game was won fairly easily by Henry’s rink by 33 to 17. Henry lias a good rink with Crocker as a very solid lead and with D. C. Burns, who went so well in the first rounds of the singles, as second player, and Matson as third man. If the rink keeps up its successes on Monday and Tuesday it will have a good chance of going on to the post-sectional play. In the fourth round game against a rink skipped by Stephenson, of Nelson, the West Harbour rink (Dunedin) scored a seven at the eighth head, ali with drawn shots. At the end of the third round'the West Harbour rink, which is skipped by Veitch, who has with him McPherson, his lead when he won the pairs championship at the 1934 Dominion tournament, has three wins, and its chances are favoured. At the end of the fourth round the following rinks were undefeated: —- Avon, Stratford (Dickinson), Hataitai (Rrightiug), Onehunga (Livingstone), Christchurch (Marks), Dunedin (Anderson), Shirley (Ramsay), Roslyu (Tyrrel), United (E. A. Smith), West End, Timaru (Currie). The -Ashburton link, consisting cf H. Colquhoun, S. Madden, W. R. Featherstone and W. H. Higgins, won one game in Section A and lost one. A Napier rink skipped by S. J. Bendall was defeated by 20 to 15, while a Barrington rink (Ramsay) won by .23 to 20. RIFLE SHOOTING. ASHBURTON DEFENCE CLUB. A. DONN WINS MATCH.
