THE MACDONALDS.
OPPONENTS! AT BY-ELECTIONS. (United Press Association—Copyright.) * LONDON, January 11. Nominations for the Scottish. Universities’ by-election are: — Mr Ramsay MacDonald (Nationalist). Professor Dewar-Gibb (Scottish Nationalist). Mr D. Clegliorn-Thomson (Labour). After hearing Air Randolph Churchill bitterly attack Messrs Malcolm and Ramsay MacDonald, the Conservatives of Ross and Cromarty, by 135 votes to 94, decided to run a Conservative candidate, and then bv 160 .votes to 4/ adopted Air Churchill, who introduced a further complication with the suggestion, which was unanimously adopted, that he should stand down, if the Liberals adopted an acceptable candidate instead of Mr Malcolm MacDonald. It is possible that an Independent, Gaelic-speaking Liberal, Mr Roderick Smith, will be nominated. The diplomatic correspondent of the “Manchester Guardian” says Conservative headquarters are confident that Air Churchill would poll a derisory vote, hut fear that a strong Liberal candidate might run Mr Alalcolm MacDonald very close. , . The Liberals will probably reject Mr Churchill’s proposal, as they officially adopted Air Alalcolm AlacDonald last week. Colonel Blair, secretary to the Scottish Conservative whip, says the Conservative leaders will certainly support Air Alalcolm AlacDonald. The Scottish Nationalists have decided not to fight the election.
