FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Jan. 13, 1886). School Committee Elections. A meeting of householders for the election.of a committee for the newly-con-stitutod district of Ashburton took place in the infant schoolroom lastevening. There were some 30 gentlemen present, and on the motion of Mr W. H. Collins, seconded by Mr C. Dixon, Mr J. Orr was proposed for the chair. Messrs Collins and Jas. McGregor were appointed scrutineers, and a ballot took place, resulting as follows :—R. Friedlander 50, J. Orr 26, E. Dimant 26, W. J. Steward 21, J. A. Caygill 21, W. J. Silcock 15, A. Craighead 11, J. C. Duncan 10, W. Craighead 9, W. W.. White 7. The firstnamed seven gentlemen were duly declared elected. There was a large attendance in the newly-constituted district of Hampstqad, Mr F. T. Mayo occupying the chair. The chairman announced the result of the poll to he as follows:—«F. T. Mayo 84, G. W. Andrews 38, C, Ward 30, F. Johnston 28, J. Hunt 24, G. Lamb 21, C. Baker 17, W. Fawcett 14, A. Orr 11, B. Hughes 10, W. Pickford 8, F. Ferriman 6. He therefore declared Messrs Mays, Andrews, Ward, Johnston, Hunt, Lamb and Baker duly elected. Water Shortage.—Water is so scarce in the suburbs of Ashburton that persons going round retailing it are doing a good business. Light of the Future.—Mr F. Haines, ao-ent for the Albo-Carbon light, which, it is claimed, is the light of the future, has arrived in. Ashburton and is staying at the Somerset Hotel. -The Albo-Carbon burners are affixed to the ordinary gas fittings, and it is claimed that while improving the light-, they reduce tlie gas bill by 50 per cent. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.
(From the “Guardian,” Jan. 13, 1911). Band Concert. The Ashburton County Brass Band gave one of its popular open-air concerts in Baring Square East last evening. There was a good muster of the band, which, under the conductorship of Mr C. Gass, played a selected programme that was much appreciated by a large number or listeners and onlookers. Harrier Club.—The Ashburton Harrier Club held a short sports meeting on the Domain Oval last evening, when there was a good attendance, hollowing are the results: —440 Yards Handicap : A. Anderson (18yds) 1, D. Moore (22yds) 2, H. Culverhouse (18yds) and F. Broome (18yds), dead heat, 3. 100 Yards Siamese Race: D. Moore and F. Broome 1, H. Mercer and A. Maclaine 2, E. Coker and F.
