(From Our Own Correspondent.) , RAKAIA. The Rakaia Tennis Club held a pleasant social evening in St. Mark’s Schoolroom on Tuesday. The guest of honour was Miss Jean Henderson, who is leaving the district to live in Christchurch., Both Miss Henderson and Mrs Henderson were presented with bouquets by Misses J. Breach and S. Breach. The president (Dr. R. A. Bagiev) expressed the loss that the Tennis Club would feel in the departure of such a good player as Miss Henderson. Dr. Bagley a iso spoke of the high esteem in which Miss Henderson was held, not merely by members of the Tennis Club, but also by the citizens generally. The club captain (Mr C. J. Ryan), for the members, presented Miss Henderson with, a leather attache case, and hoped that she would always remember the pleasant times she had spent with the Rakaia club. Mr W. D. Jamieson, for the committee, thanked Miss Henderson for her valuable work as a member of the committee. Miss C. Shannon (vice-captain), for the women, expressed the sincere regret they would feel in the departure of such aigood sport and player. The Rev. H. J. W. Knights said that not only was the tennis club losing an excellent member, but the district was losing a highly esteemed family. Miss Henderson thanked all present for their kindly thoughts, and said her association with the Rakaia. club would always remain in her memory. The evening was spent in games and dancing to music played by Misses C. Shannon, J. Breach, E. Kidd and Mr W. Lightfoot. Comp izltions were wen by Miss M. Brown and the Rev. W. A. Mills, Mrs M. V Brown and Mr G. McAnulty. Items were given hv Misses R. Crossley and F. Kidd (vocal duet), Mr C. J. Ryen (vocal solos), Mr V. Wilson 'tapdoncesL The accompanists were Miss J. Broach and Dr. Bagley. Mr C. J. Ryan was master of ceremonies. Members of the Anglican Ladies’ Guild and Mothers’ Union met at the vicarage recently to hid farewell to M:s Henderson, who, after living in the district for 15 years, was lea,/mg ftr Christchurch. For both bodies, the Rev. H. J. W. Knights presented Mrs Henderson with a china tea service and expressed the regret that all would feel in her departure. Mr Knights also praised the valuable services given by Mrs Henderson to all the societies and unions with which she had been connected. Other speakers were Mesdames Breach, sen., G. Clark, W. Palmer, Barlow and Street. Afternoon tea brought the afternoon to a close. MAYFIELD. A very enjoyable dance was held in the Mayfield Hall to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs P. J. R. Peoples, who are leaving the district. Visitors were present from all the surrounding districts. Music was supplied by Mrs Mitchell’s orchestra (Ashburton), and Mr L. Lillev was M.C. Mr Peoples lias been on the local staff of the Post and Telegraph Department for the last sixyears, and is being transferred to Rnngiora. On behalf of the residents of the district, Mr I)uff presented Mr Peoples with a Avnllet of notes and Mrs Peoples with a crystal dish and a set of stainless spoons and forks. He spoke of the good qualities of Mr People in the post office. On behalf of the school eommttee Mr B. McKay thanked Mrs Peoples for her kindly assistance with the school concerts. Mr I. Anderson spoke on behalf of the Football Club. Mr Edis and Mr Kay also joined in wishing Mr and Mrs Peoples health and prosperity in their new home. Mr Peoples suitably replied.
