JAPANESE VIEW
“THE WEAKNESS OF BRITAIN.” NEWSPAPERS’ VIRULENT ATTACK CONFLICT NOT IMPOSSIBLE. (United Press Association —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, January 8. The Tokio correspondent of the “Herald” says that a series of virulent anti-British articles has suddenly started to appear in prominent Japanese papers, stressing Britain’s “military and industrial decline,” and also her “inability to further develop her colonies,” while Japan remains landstarved. The influential “Kugumin” quotes Mr Baldwin’s speeches on the weakness of the British Army and Navy. It says that Great Britain is reluctant to fight to-day, instancing the Oxford Union’s vote “that this house would not fight for King and country.” The newspaper adds that Japan may well come into conflict with Britain in her development in the south. The article does not mention Australia by name, but emphasises Japan’s need for territory to accommodate her increasing population.
