BOWLING.

PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. CHRISTCHURCH, January 8. The first three rounds of the pairs championship in the New Zealand Bowling Association’s tournament were played to-day. Two further rounds will be played to-morrow morning, and after they are completed post-sectional play will lie begun. The greens were in good condition until late in the afternoon, when a sudden shower of rain deadened them and on some greens caused a slight halt in play. Most interest was taken- in the appearance of a party of bowlers from New South Wales who made their first appearance in the tournament. At a slight disadvantage in their first games on unfamiliar greens, the visiting pairs did fairly well. Some of them suffered early defeats, but their style of play impressed the spectators. One of the pairs, playing at St. Albans, A. E. Packer and W. Law (s.), had comfortable wins, in the first two rounds, H. C. Alloo, from Owaka, avlio distinguished himself on Tuesday by being the only singles player to come through the post-sectional play with two lives in hand, had his first defeat of the tournament. Playing at Papnnui, J. (Nicholson and J. Anderson (s.), of Timaru, beat E. G. Dale and Alloo (s.), 18-14, after an interesting game. Although last year’s winners, IT. G. Loveridge and R. N. Pilkington (s.), of Hamilton, are not defending their title, there are many competing in the pairs who have had successes in former tournaments. W. Bremner and C. E. Hardley (West End, Auckland), who won the pairs in 1932, are again competing. They suffered a loss, in the first round to T. Quirk and J. J. Kennerley (s), Spreydon, hut won their second round game. Two members of the West Harbour Club, Dunedin, Veitch and McPherson, who Avon the title tAvo years ago, are again in the pairs, hut they are not playing in the same pair. G. I. Gladding, a member of the Avinning pair in 1930, and Maxwell Walker, who skipped the first pair in 1927, are not this year in the pairs, hut both will make a reappearance in the rinks, which begin on Friday. Hedges (Allenton) has had three wins.
