(From the “Guardian,” Jan. 9, 1911). Ashburton Dairy Factory.—The Hon. G. J. Smith and his two sonß made a special motor trip to Ashburton to-day for the purpose of inspecting the Ashburton Central Dairy Factory. Mr Smith expressed the opinion thatathe factory is the most up-to-date in Canterbury and was pleased to see that the dairying industry had been established on a firm basis ■ in the Ashburton County. Mr A. Smith has a property of 23,000 acres in the North Island, and as it is his intention to subdivide the land and foster the dairying industry, his visit to Ashburton was for the purpose of gaining some idea of the style of factory to erect. He intends to erect a building on the lines of the Ashburton factory. Larrikinism. “They’re annoying little things,” said the Mayor at last night’s meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council. He referred to several mischievous acts which had been committed by larrikins in the Domain. One morning recently the new pegs which had been erected in the dressing-rooms at the Domain baths were found to have been all broken off during the night. On another occasion the tank at the cemetery had been emptied by some person turning on one of the main taps. It is understood that the police have several of the matters in hand.
