RAILWAY BOOKINGS.

ASHBURTON HOLIDAY TRAFFIC. AN INCREASE RECORDED. More people travelled from Ashburton by train during the holiday season this summer than last. Over the period from December 22 to January 2 (inclusive) there were 2034 passenger bookings (north and south) from Ashburton, compared with 1755 in the same period 12 months ago, an increase of 279. The bookings from December 22, 1933, to January 2, 1934, were 1649, and those for the rush period 12 months prior to that were 1761. The busiest day this season, as well as last, was New Year’s Day, when 323 travelled from Ashburton to race meetings and other sports attractions, compared with 309 on January 1, 1934. The service was also well patronised yesterday, many people returning north to recommence work. Some difficulty was found in getting seats at Ashburton, and extra carriages had to be put on the expresses. The following table shows the figures for each day of the rush period in each

A number of bookings were recorded to-day, but the traffic is rapidly becoming less heavy, as the holidays for most people are over.
