NEW YEAR TELEGRAPH TRAFFIC LARGE INCREASE RECORDED. Telegraph and telephone traffic at Ashburton on New Year’s Eve was considerable and the number of messages handled shows a large increase compared with the 1934 total. Although not so extensive as that at Christmas, the business kept the staff fully engaged. New Year greetings were popular and the dispatch of good wishes by telephone was also a well-patronised service. A total of 022 telegrams was handled on New Year’s Eve, compared with 520 in 1934 and 330 in 1933. The actual greetings telegrams numbered 340, compared with 259 in 1934 and 157 in 1933.
