FRUIT EXPORT.
AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND. UNDERSTANDING AT CONFERENCE. (Per Press Association). HASTINGS, December 27. The results of the conference recently held in Australia to deal with export fruit from New Zealand and Australia for the 1936 export season, will be made available once the New Zealand representatives have had an opportunity of discussing certain aspects of the position with the Government. The New Zealand delegation consisted of Mr H. E. Stephens and Mr R. Paynter, members of the New Zealand Fruit Control Board. Mr W. Benzies, secretary to the Board, and Mr J. A. Campbell, Director of the Horticultural Division of the Department of Agriculture. Mr Paynter said to-day that the New Zealand delegates conferred with representatives of the Australian Apples and Pears Council as to restrictions, if any, on the export of fruit to the United Kingdom from both countries in the 1926 season. The conference, said Mr Paynter, was a great success. The Australian delegates expressed preparedness, on behalf of their respective States, to make considerable sacrifices, if by their so doing markets in the United Kingdom could be somewhat stabilised until more normal conditions prevailed. An understanding was arrived at by the conference; but the New Zealand delegates, he explained, wished to discuss certain phases of the position with the Government before giving a definite reply. Mr Paynter added that it was expected that the Control Board would be able to export all the suitable fruit that would be available in New Zealand during the 1936 seaosn. Reports generally had indicated that the quantity of fruit available for export would not be as great as had been anticipated six weeks ago, when there were prospects of an abnormally heavy crop throughout the Dominion.
