VICTORIAN FLOODS
MAIN HIGHWAY BLOCKED. MANY PEOPLE VACATE HOMES. HOLIDAY-MAKERS STRANDED. (United Press Association—Copyright). (Received This Day, 12.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Traffic on the Princes Highway, the main route from Sydney to Melbourne, was brought to a standstill by the washing away of a culvert near the New South Wales border. Hundreds of cars were forced to turn back. Record rains in the last 48 hours, totalling 15 inches in some parts, flooded hundreds of square miles in the Gippsland district. Thousands of stranded campers and tourists and many people who have been flooded out of their homes have been given makeshift accommodation in halls and churches.
