SERIOUS ’QUAKE.
INACCESSIBLE AREA OF CHINA. HUGE DEATH-ROLL LIKELY. (United Press Association —Copyright.) SHANGHAI, December 25. Reports from southern Szechuan province (bordering on Tibet) state that an earthquake on December 18 destroved many villages and caused a deathroll that may reach thousands, the primitive mountain-dwelling Lolo tribesmen being the chief sufferers. The inaccessibility of the devastated area made it impossible to determine the exact extent of the disaster. The reports tell of a mountain split open for a mile and avalanches which dammed streams and turned fertile valleys into lakes.
