THEATRE DESTROYED.
BIG BLAZE AT OTAK!. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, December 25. A fire which broke out at 4.15 this morning destroyed the Cosy Theatre at Otaki. Nothing was saved. The flames had a good hold when they were noticed, and the building, which, was constructed of wood and iron, burned like kindling wood. In an hour it was completely consumed. A family hotel which adjoins the site of the theatre was slightly damaged, and the heat cracked some plate-glass windows in shops across the street. The theatre was owned by the Ballinger estate, and 1 was leased by Kemball Amusements, Ltd. It was built in 1913; but up-to-date apparatus for the exhibition of talking pictures had been installed. It was the only picture theatre in the town, and seated about 800 persons. The Otaki Fire Brigade, although it was unable to prevent the destruction of the building in which the fire started, prevented it extending to buildings nearby.
