CANTERBURY V. M.C.C. TEAM. HOME SIDE 135 FOR SIN. CPer Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. With Hadlee on the way back to the pavilion after the fourth hall of the day, Canterbury was in a bad position when the cricket match against M.C.C. was .resumed to-day. Conditions were perfect. When Canterbury (36 for one) resumed its second innings Reid opened the bowling and Hadlee was caught by bowler off his fourth ball after four minutes’ play. 38-2-19. • Kerr replaced Hadlee. Butterfield off-drove Read for three. Kerr started quietly and was content to defend his wicket. With * the first ball in his second over Baxter clean-bowled Butterfield. The ball kept very low apd Butterfield knew nothing about it. 42-3-11. Cromb joined Kerr, who was definitely uncomfortable in facing Baxter. A swell shot to the fence at .square-leg off Read was* Cromb’s first scoring shot. Kerr batted more freely after midday and smacked Human for two further boundaries, lifting his score to 69. Canterbury’s hopes were dashed when Cromb, stepping out to a fast one from Sims, snicked the hall to Barber. O’Brien replaced' the Canterbury captain at the crease. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 131 for four wickets. On resuming, O’Brien was bowled by Read, having scored 11. Kerr was caught at slips off Read when he had made 73. 135-6-73. The Plunket Shield match, Auckland v. Otago, was resumed to-day in beautiful weather. Postles (7) and Weir (16) continued their second wicket partnership for Auckland’s second innings, to the attack of Clines and Henderson. The latter was not impressive and gave way to Dunning, but runs came consistently, not from particularly bright batting. Postles, at 19, liad a narrow escape from being run out, Toomey failing to gather the ball. The overnight score of 32 was doubled at a little under a run a minute. Weir off-drove Dunning soundly and glided Elmes to the fence. He reached 50, and turned Badcock for two, who had replaced Elmes. Smith’s advent at the howling crease induced Weir to force the pace, which he did successfully at the expense of the new bowler and Badcock, eventually lifting the latter for six. Henderson and Elmes were brought hack again and a couple of boundaries off the former put Wejr in the nineties. He reached the century just before luncheon after .14.4 minutes’ chanceless batting. Postles had batted stubbornly for 38. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 157 for one. Details are: AUCKLAND. Second Innings.
