A MEDITERRANEAN CRUISE.
THE FRENCH! ATLANTIC FLEET. REMOVING BRITISH REPROACH. ♦ (United Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, December 23. Significance is attached to an order for the French Atlantic Fleet, normally based at Brest, to cruise in African waters in January. The Paris correspondent cf “The Times” says that this should do something to remove the reproach of inaction, as the squadron will cruise for some weeks along the coast between Gibraltar and Dakar. It is officially explained that the order was (given because the fleet wanted more favourable weather for its annual exercises, but according to the Paris correspondent of the “Daily Herald” it is interpreted in some quarters as a political gesture with international implications. M. Pietri (Minister for Marine), who, like many Corsicans, is known to be hostile to Italy, with doubtful enthusiasm for M. Laval’s policy, is mentioned as among M. Laval’s possible successors. Therefore the order to the fleet may be a gesture to those wishing strong support for the League action,
