Stephen’s Church to-night at 10 p.m. A collection AA r ill he made for the Choir Boys’ Recreation Fund. Presbyterian Choir. —The Presbyterian Choir, by rendered the service of song “Little Minnie” in the Chdrch ion . Tuesday night; There was not -a very, large attendance, but the performance was an excellent one, Mr G. W. Savage acted as conductor, and Miss G. Borough Council Election.—The noil for the election of a member to ' fill the vacant seat on the Borough Council caused by the resignation of Mr J. Orr took place yesterday. Three candidates contested the election, in which a fair interest yvas manifested, a considerable number of votes being recorded. Punctually. at the time, announced for the declaration of the poll, the Returning,Officer, Mr C. Braddejl, stated the result to be as follows: Alexander Craighead SI, George William Andrews 34, Andrew Young 33, informal 2. He therefyore declared Mr Alexander Craighead duly elected. Chertsey Saleyards.-—The opening of the new Chertsey saleyards has - tfeen fixed for January 4. ; • TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Dee. 24. 1910.) Gifts to Old Men’s Home.—The Master of the Old Men’s Home Avish.es to acknoAvledge the following Christmas gifts for the inmates:—.Messrs A If. Bray,, summer, drinks; E. J. Cox, sausages; Hynam Marks’s Trustees,,a cheque ; Ashburton Territorials, a .cheque. Last night, too, Miss Dixon took up a party of children, and gave the men a very enjoyable concert. The Cemetery.—Owing to the difficulty experienced at times by residents in getting water at the Ashburton cemetery or the purpose of watering floivers and shrubs" on the the Ashburton Cemetery Board has had a Avindmill and tank stand erected. This will he much appreciated by those Avho constantly visit there. . Christmas Decorations.—The disagreeable north-west Avind that prevailed to-day considerably interfered with the outward decoration of business premises.
