BREAK-UP AT TIN WALD. THE SUCCESSFUL PUPILS. The annual break-up ceremony of the Tinwald School was held on Tluusday afternoon. Proceedings started when h atliei Christmas arrived in the Parish Hall at 1.15, and mingled with the children, while they performed their dances and sang their songs. infant received a gift from a splendidly decorated tree supplied by Mr F. Aldridge. Miss Doak (infant mistress) was responsible for it successful afternoon. , In the school grounds the senior boys played the senior girls rounders, and Avon by a handsome margin. The whole assembly of parents and children ivas later addressed by the chairman of the school committee (Mr J. H. Harper) and the Rev. D. D. McLachlan. The chairman presented prizes for "gardening to Robert H. Bell (donated byi Mr Frew) and to Walter Small (donated by Mr Lowery). Sewing prizes given by Miss Haar and Mr Small ivere Avon by Peggy Bishop, Margaret Colville, and Joy Parrish. The chairman eulogised the Avork of the headmaster in securing twelve proficiencies and one competency with liis thirteen candidates'. Mr Lowery presented the dux medal to Robert H. Bell. lan Loach (captain of the midget hockey team), was called op. to receive the hockey cup for the second year in succession. Mr Harper spoke highly of the work of the teachers and of their very successful results. The headmaster (Mr M. P. Cooke) congratulated the parents in turning out in such large numbers to show their increasing interest in the school work. He spoke highly of the Avork of his staff and thanked them for their efforts. He called for cheers for the school committee, Avho had all worked so well and had done so much for the welfare of the school during the year. Cheers were also given for the girls who had looked after the library, and for the school-cleaner, Mrs Husband. Proficiency certificates ancl attendance certificates Avere then given out, and sports were afterwards held for the children. The annual prize-giving and break-up ceremony of the Flffelton 'School took place on Wednesday afternoon. Prior to the prize-grid ug, parents and friends inspected a display of school work and the comprehensive exhibition of draAVing, handwork, writing,’ etc., evoked favourable comment. Mr J. H. Gngg, addressing the children, congratulated them on the excellent state of the school grounds and gardens, and urged them to make the most of the opportunities they had of training themselves to become useful citizens. LAURISTON. • The annual prize-giving and concert in connection Avith the Lauriston school Avas held in the 'Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, on Thursday evening. The hall was filled to capacity Avith parents, pupils, and friends. The items were contributed mainly by the A special feature Avas a brilliant performance by Constable Robertson’s famous dog, “Rajah,” this item being greatly enjoyed by all present. SPRINGBURN There Avas a fair attendance at the break-up at Spring!)urn, Avhich Avas made novel by the attendance of Father Christmas, aa’lio distributed toys to the small children. Each pupil received a gift book. The Roy Campbell memorial prizes AA*ere presented as follow:—Form 11., lan Lion; Form 1., Enid Fagan; Standard IV., Michael Flynn; Standard Hi., Norma Watson. BUSHSIDE The annual picnic in connection with the break-up of the Bushside School was held at Lock’s Crossing, Ashburton River. The chairman of the school committee (Mr G. Fittock) Avelcomed the gathering and congratulated Mr F. W. Cutler (head teacher) on the year’s work. He specially referred to the Avay in which the Rev. Trevor Williams had associated himself with the school, and asked him to present the prizes. Each, child received a gift book. Attendance certificates were presented as fellow:—John McGinn, Molly McGinn, Hector McAulay, Maurice Fittock, Jack Totty, Doreen Wright and Alf. Green. Games, sports and refreshments occupied the remainder of the day.
