VALUELESS CHEQUES

MAN POSES AS CLERGYMAN. __ . (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, Nov. 13. Evidence of a: series of cheques presented by a man dressed as a: clergyman and subsequently dishonoured by the Union Bank of Australia, was given in the Magistrate’s Court yoday, when Charles Richard George Ross, a. blacksmith, aged 36, was charged before Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., with breaking and entering a countinghouse, and on four counts of false pretences by. means of ralueless e‘heques. Some of the cheques used were drawn by “f[’.'Gray” on the Union Bank of Australia, and were'made payable to “the Rev. S. Carr.” Across the bottom of the forms was stamped “The Methodist B'IiSSiOH.” A motor car was obtained by a cheque drawn on the National Bank of New Zea-land in Courtenay Place. Many witnesses were ’ealled, and evidence was given of a person dressed as a clergyman presenting cheques. Hubert Partridge, a grocer, was de—finite in his identification of the accused. He refused to cash the cheque, and the accused replied that he would see “his good Woman,” who “probably has a few shillings in her purse.” Ross pleaded guilty and was com—mitted for sentence.
