METHVEN, The Methven Lawn Tennis Club is enjoying a most successful season. The membership lias been largely increased this year, and the club has now well over 100 members. On Saturday the courts were crowded until a late hour. If the present position continues the club will have to seriously consider additional courts. The Methven Girl Guides and Brownies celebrated their sixth birthday with a party held in the Anglican Hall on Friday evening. Games and competitions were enjoyed by all. Miss Mary Battson contributed a pianoforte solo. The Distinct Commissioner (Mrs Wilkinson) had a busy evening, as she enrolled the newly-formed; committee as follows:—Mesdames J. F. Stone (president), A. S'. Kennedy, A. O. Lochhead, H. Fryer, H. G. Ayers, J. Dhff, C. Ireland, R. Callaghan (secretary) and Miss E. Green. Afterwards there was a Brownie “flying up” ceremony, Brownies D. Middleton and B. Stone , flying up. The enrolment of four Guides followed —Guides B. Stone, D. Middleton, I. McKay and 1.. Gray. Before supper Mrs Callaghan (the guest of honour) and Mrs Wilkinson were presented with posies of flowers from a Guide and Brownie respectively. Miss C. Holmes (acting-cap-tain) spoke on behalf of the company and pack of the services Mrs Callaghan had rendered during the inception of the company and brownie pack six years ago, and expressed regret at losing her services. Company-Leader Rema Street made a presentation of a framed photograph of the company and pack to Mrs Callaghan as a token of appreciation of her services. • A feature of the supper was the cutting of guide and brownie birthday cake by the youngest members. Mrs Wilkinson presented the service stars -won during the year as fellow: —Rema Street (five vears), Evelyn Paterson, Ngaio Johns,* Grace Fryer, Frances Young, Thelma- Lochhead, Jean Newman, Peggy Green, Mary Battson, Norma Stone, Joyce Ayers, Rita Wright, Ellen Burrows, Marjorie Smith and Betty Stone. The evening was brought to a close with the singing' of “Taps,” the closing song of all meetings. RUAPUNA. The following were present at a committee meeting of the Ruapuna Hall and Library Trustees: —Messrs G. Ross (chairman), J. Moore, J. H. Boaler, J. Oakley, R. W. Holland, R. Lane and H. R. Tasker. A circular was received from the Ashburton County Council about the consumption of liquor at dances in country districts. It was decided to reply that no trouble had been experienced* in this respect, but that the trustees would be pleased to co-operate with the council and take general precautions. A letter was received from the school committee asking for a rebate on the charge for social evenings. It was decided to grant a rebate,, amounting to 30s on the meetings held during last winter. A letter was received from the Public Trustee advising that Mr W. J. Allan had bequeathed £25 to the funds of the Library Trustees. MAYFIELD. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Mayfield Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held in the Mayfield Hall, the N.G. (Bro. John Edmond) presiding. One candidate was initiated, Sister M. Elms acting as lecture master. As no more nominations' were received for the offices of N.G., V.G. and E. 5.,. it was decided that they be closed. Sick pay amounting to 10s in favour of one member was passed for payment. After the business a social half-hour was held. BARRHILL. Mrs J. I. Hughes presided at the November meeting of the Barrhill Women’s Institute. An interesting talk on the Dominion conference was given by Mrs Limbrick (Lyndhurst). Competitions resulted: Shortbread: Miss Chambers 1, Mrs Toon 2. Best arranged flowers: Miss Tizzard 1, Miss Chambers 2. Prettiest cup and saucer: Mrs Toon 1, Mrs Hughes 2. A treasure hunt was won by Mrs Hughes. Miss R>. Drew was hostess.
