OBITUARY

MRS MARY CAMPBELL. AN OLD SPR ING BURN RESIDENT. A resident of Springburn for nearlj 25 years, Mrs Mary Campbell, widow of the late Mr Neil Campbell, of Roxburgh, Springburn, died suddenly at Rakaia on Saturday. She was in her 75th year and had been in comparatively good health until the day before her passing, having made a remarkable recovery from a serious operation last year. Born in Edinburgh on December 51), 1860, Mrs Campbell was before her marriage Miss Herbert, and came to New Zealand at the age of about 14. She was married to Mr Campbell at Tapanui and shortly afterwards came to reside at Springburn. Mr Campbell took part in the gold rush to Gabriel s Gully and later farmed at Moeraki before he bought the Roxburgh farm of 1180 acres at Springburn. Mr Campbell predeceased his wife by many years, and Mrs Campbell was obliged to dispose of the Springburn property' at the time of the Great War. At its conclusion, she came to reside with her son, Mr Gordon S. Campbell, at Rakaia, and had lived quietly there until her death. Of a bright, happy disposition, Mrs Campbell had a wide circle of friends in all parts of the County. She was a very devoted worker for the Presbyterian Church both at Springburn and at Rokebv. Seven children survive their mother, one son, Mr R. Campbell, having been killed at the war. Mrs Campbell donated the Roy Campbell Memorial Prize at the Springburn School in his memory. The sons are Messrs C. H. Campbell (Springburn), G. S. Campbell (Rakaia), A. N. Campbell (Ouiln), and K. Campbell (Christchurch), and the daughters Mrs Angus Horsey (Ashburton), Mrs W. A. Hart (Rakaia), and Miss Campbell (Rakaia). The funeral took place at dhe Ashburton Cemetery yesterday, the Rev. D. B. Ashford, of Rakaia, conducting the service. Among the many floral tributes were wreaths from- the Rokcby Presbyterian Sunday School teachers and scholars and from the committee, teachers, and pupils of the Springburn school.
