LOOKING BACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE, (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 12, 1885.) “Soldier-like Appearance.” Last night’s “Star” says: A detachment of the Ashburton Rifles, the squad which is to take part in the bayonet competition at the Volunteer Fancy Fair to-night, arrived by the midday .train to-day. They presented a very soldierlike and creditable appearance as they marched through the streets headed by their bugler who played a march in admirable style, . . . • V . j Shearing by Machine.—A machine for shearing sheep is said to be in successful operation in Victoria. It is made of brass in the shape of a smrfll trowel; the motion is actuated by a turbine wheel, some three inches in diameter, geared into another wheel, on which is fixed a> cutter. In. front ;is a comb, serving as a guard against cutting the skin. Tno steam is conveyed to the boiler by a tube of indiarubber which is double, having one inside the other. The inner one is in the injection and the space between the two is the ejection. The machine is used in the same fashion as the shears, but cuts, it is stated, much quicker and far cleaner without tho least danger of injuring the fleece or the sheep. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. Little’s office last evening, Mr B. T. Misseii in the chair. There was an attendance of about 20 ladies, and it was unanimously resolved that a club should be former. Mr Missen said that it would be better to form a club separate from the Ashburton Amateur' Swimming Club, but he thought that it could be arranged that the two clubs should act in unison. The following officers were elected-.—Patron, Mrs W. Nosworthy; president, Mrs E-. Willis; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames B. T. Missen, W. Hodgkins, T. F. Gibson, C. W. Branigan, D. Wood and C. Campbell; captain, Miss M. Buchanan; secretary, Miss M. Dent; treasurer, Miss-j Porter; committee, Misses Foster, M. Osborne and E. M. Branigan. . ' Erection of Water-tower.—The reerection of the water-tower in connection with the Borough ivater supply will be commenced on Monday next. Messrs Scott Brothers, the contractors, sent the iron ground-work of the tower from Christchurch yesterday and the construction will be pushed on rapidly. r Vi V
