CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, October 31. This has been an exceedingly quiet week in the Christchurch grain and produce market. The only change from last week’s quotations is a slight advance in the .price of fowl wheat, the Wheat Purchase Board’s stocks being exhausted in the meantime. Oats remain stable after a slight firming m the previous week. ... There is still no movement in the potato market. Some farmers are ready to sdl, but there are no orders to fill and it can be assumed that the season is practically over. One merchant said to-day that if any further business were done it would he at a. price m the vicinity of from £7 10s to £8 a ton. ■lt is expected that recent rains will result in a demand for small seeds, but this has so far not been in evidence. The following are quotations for produce paid to farmers on trucks, free of commission, sacks extra, except where otherwise stated: — Milling Wheat—October delivery: Tuscan 4s sd, Hunters 4s 7d, Pearl and Velvet 4s 9d, f.o.b. Selling prices to millers for October (all f.0.b.): Tuscan 5s o£d, Hunters 5s 2£d, Pearl and Velvet 5s 4£d. Fowl Wheat—To 4s, South island. , . Bran—Local, £4 15s; shipping, £4 10s. Pollard-Local, £6 ss; shipping, £5 10s. Flour—Local £l2 7s; shipping £ll 12s, with the usual increments tor smaller lots. SYDNEY WOOL SALES.

ACTIVE JAPANESE COMPETITION

SYDNEY, October 31. At the wool sales 12,930 hales were offered, 11,604 were sold at auction and 3240 privately. Japanese competition was particularly active for medium and ordinary fleece wools, whilst Yorkshire spinneis and the Continent competed strongly for deeper crown and better-class fleece. Bidding for faulty lines was irregular. Greasy merino made to 22£d.
