NO INTERFERENCE
SLIDING DUTIES ON WHEAT.
DEMOCRAT PARTY POLICY.
(Special to the “Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
The Democrat Party has no intention of interfering with the sliding scale of wheat duties. This was made clear by the leader of the party (Mr T. O. A. Hislop) in his speech last evening. Mr Hislop mentioned the proposal for the abolition of the duties which appeared in the first manifesto issued by bis party. Ho said that some time ago, before the actual policy of the party was laid down and when the organisation was first formed, among its planks was the proposal fox- the abolition of the wheat duties. But long after that the definite policy of the party had been hammered out by a conference of delegates and candidates. The party knew the difficulties of the position. The party realised the position of the pig-producers and poultryfarmers, and yet the difficulty they met with in increased prices for their wheat as feed for their stock. Bub the party also realised the position of the wheat-growers interested in their industry. The policy of the' party laid it clown that assistance would be given for pig-producers and poultry-farmers in the general scheme for subsidising agriculture and assistance for farmers. But the definite policy of the party was that the sliding scale of wheat duties would not be interfered with.
